LCPS Update Graphic

Dear LCPS Families,

I am writing to share an important update following the Loudoun County School Board's meeting on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. The Board has unanimously passed the Secure Storage Notification Resolution, a significant step towards enhancing the safety and well-being of our students and community.

This resolution aims to equip parents with vital information regarding state laws on firearm storage. By doing so, we hope to empower families to make informed decisions that prioritize safety at home.

The resolution highlights alarming statistics about gun violence in our country:

  • Approximately 4.6 million American children live in homes with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm.

  • Every year, around 350 children under the age of 18 unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else, with 70% of these incidents occurring in their own homes.

  • Tragically, 1,200 children and teens die by gun suicide annually, often using firearms belonging to family members.

  • In cases of gun violence on school grounds, 75% of active shooters are current students or recent graduates, with up to 80% of shooters under the age of 18 obtaining their guns from their own homes, relatives’ homes, or friends.

Research indicates that secure firearm storage practices can reduce the risk of unintentional firearm injuries among children and teens by as much as 85%.

As LCSB member April Chandler, who proposed the resolution, stated, “The actions I asked my fellow Board Members to take through the resolution are just common sense. The most important aspect of this effort is to get information into the hands of the people who can make the most impact.” We appreciate the support of all Board members in prioritizing our students' safety through this important measure.

With this resolution, we will be updating the Student Handbook to include information regarding parents' obligations for the secure storage of firearms. Additionally, a notification will be created and included in the annual registration materials distributed at each school. This notification will explain the importance of secure gun storage and legal obligations to prevent minors from accessing irresponsibly stored firearms.

As Superintendent, I want to express my gratitude to the School Board for passing this important resolution. The reality of gun violence in schools is extremely troubling and is something that keeps me up at night both as a father and as your superintendent. This resolution is just one of the many proactive measures we are implementing at LCPS to ensure the safety and well-being of our students. Together, we are committed to creating a secure environment where our children can learn and thrive.

Furthermore, the School Board and I will continue to collaborate with local law enforcement agencies, health organizations, and nonprofits to enhance our efforts in informing LCPS families about their responsibilities regarding secure firearm storage in their homes.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to the safety of our children. Together, we can make a significant difference.

With gratitude,

Aaron Spence Ed.D.
Superintendent
