JL Simpson Middle School has made history as the first public school in Northern Virginia to earn the prestigious Heart Safe School recognition from the Children's Hospital of Richmond Project Adam initiative. This honor is a testament to the dedication of school nurse Rene Pettit whose efforts led to the creation of the school’s Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT). Pettit’s efforts have placed safety and wellness at the forefront, ensuring the school community is prepared for potential medical emergencies.
“Our students' well-being is our top priority and we are proud to be leading the way in ensuring a safe environment for everyone at JL Simpson,” said Dr. Tripp Di Nicola, Principal. “Thanks to Nurse Pettit and the MERT team, we are well-prepared to handle emergencies and prevent tragedies. We hope this recognition encourages more schools to establish dedicated MERT teams and prioritize student and staff safety in the same way.”
Project ADAM, a nationwide initiative, assists schools and communities in developing emergency response plans in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. Through Pettit’s leadership, MERT has been thoroughly trained and drilled to respond swiftly and effectively to cardiac emergencies, reinforcing the school's commitment to student and staff safety.
Project ADAM affiliates provide schools with the necessary tools to establish and refine their emergency response strategies including planning templates and personalized consultations. These resources empower schools like JL Simpson Middle to prevent sudden cardiac death within their walls and offer peace of mind to families and staff alike.
The Heart Safe School recognition is a proud moment for JL Simpson Middle, highlighting its commitment to creating a safe and healthy environment for all.
